Book Survey 2013

Posted December 2, 2013 by Andi in General / 0 Comments

I saw this post on Jamie at The Perpetual Page Turner’s blog and I just couldn’t pass up a survey. You’ll be able to tell what my favorite books are from this one definitely. And for the record I tried to keep all of the 2014 reads that I read out of this post for fairness, but I have read some amazingness coming out next year so pay attention. Thank for doing this Jamie. The banners are also from her post so the credit goes to her.

1. Best Book You Read In 2013? (If you have to cheat — you can break it down by genre if you want or 2013 release vs. backlist) I can’t really narrow it down to just one as I have read some AMAZING books this year(with a few slated for a 2014 release).

Basically the best I can do it is a small list:
jellicoealteredprogram  pivot  allfangirl
Jellicoe Road by Melina Marchettta (review)
Altered by Jennifer Rush (review)
The Program by Suzanne Young (review)
Pivot Point by Kasie West (review)
All Our Yesterdays by Cristin Terrill
Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell (review)

2. Book You Were Excited About & Thought You Were Going To Love More But Didn’t?

By far and wide Rise by Anna Carey. It was the 3rd book in the Eve trilogy and I have never been more angry at a book then I was at this one. It completely ruined the whole series for me and I still want to throw it across a room when I think about it.

3. Most surprising (in a good way!) book of 2013?

Altered by Jennifer Rush. I’m not sure what my expectations were for it, but it was simply amazing in my eyes and the fact that it didn’t seem to have the buzz it deserved really knocked me for a loop.

4. Book you read in 2013 that you recommended to people most in 2013?

altered

pivot

allprogramAltered, Pivot Point, All Our Yesterdays, The Program. Ask Gail and Kayla, I’m a major book bully for these titles.

5. Best series you discovered in 2013?

A tie for Altered and All Our Yesterdays

6. Favorite new author you discovered in 2013?

Suzanne Young. She has had some books out for a while and I had never read anything of hers until I read Just Like Fate which was written by her and Cat Patrick. After reading that I had to read The Program. Been hooked on her since. Also hugely in love with Kasie West, Jennifer Rush and Cristin Terrill, but they were new authors in 2013 so they of course would be new to me.

7. Best book that was out of your comfort zone or was a new genre for you?

graceling

Graceling by Kristin Cashore. Way back in December of 2012, the end of the month, I decided I was going to try and step out of my comfort zone and read things outside of my norm. After much prodding, Graceling was the final pick and the first book I read in 2013. And to my surprise, I LOVED it.

8. Most thrilling, unputdownable book in 2013?

There were a lot of books I couldn’t put down this year, but I would have to say that Altered was the one that I had trouble putting down and read it in a little over a day.

9. Book You Read In 2013 That You Are Most Likely To Re-Read Next Year?

Well definitely Anna and the French Kiss which I read for the 6th time(a 7th is on the horizon) and maybe All Our Yesterdays since the next book is out next year and I will need a refresher.

10. Favorite cover of a book you read in 2013?

Parallel by Lauren Miller

Jellicoe Road by Melina Marchetta

13. Book that had the greatest impact on you in 2013?

Allegiant by Veronica Roth. Book demolished me

14. Book you can’t believe you waited UNTIL 2013 to finally read?

Jellicoe Road by Melina Marchetta

15. Favorite Passage/Quote From A Book You Read In 2013?

The Transfer by Veronica Roth 34 pages

17. Book That Had A Scene In It That Had You Reeling And Dying To Talk To Somebody About It? (a WTF moment, an epic revelation, a steamy kiss, etc. etc.) Be careful of spoilers!

21. Genre You Read The Most From in 2013?

Based off a guess I would say contemporary.

22. Newest fictional crush from a book you read in 2013?

Finn from All Our Yesterdays.

23. Best 2013 debut you read?

Pivot Point by Kasie West, Parallel by Lauren Miler, All Our Yesterdays by Cristin Terrill and Altered by Jennifer Rush

24. Most vivid world/imagery in a book you read in 2013?

Splintered by A.G. Howard. The take on Wonderland was pretty amazing.

25. Book That Was The Most Fun To Read in 2013?

Gotta go with Pivot Point on this one.

26. Book That Made You Cry Or Nearly Cry in 2013?

heartbeat maybe alligient

I actually cried more times in 2013 when reading then I have in any other year. Two of the books don’t come out until 2014, Heartbeat by Elizabeth Scott and Maybe One Day by Melissa Kantor. And then there was Allegiant. I could have ended a drought with that one.

27. Book You Read in 2013 That You Think Got Overlooked This Year Or When It Came Out?

Altered. 100% Altered was over looked by many thinking it is yet another dystopian when it isn’t anything close.

  1. Love the list…but what about all the books you are going to read in December?

I do a similar survey to this in my year-end-wrap up post but think I might have to come back and steal some of these questions. =)

  2. Yes, yes you are a book bully. But without you I wouldn’t have met Nick <3333 I am forever indebted!!! And as your faithful stalker, I can attest to the fact that you read mostly contemporary.

  3. I can’t believe I haven’t read JELLICOE ROAD, yet. It’s waiting patiently on my night stand, even, which usually means it’s up next but I’ve been delaying it while trying to read 2013 releases. 🙂

Oh, ALLEGIANT. I don’t know if I’ll ever fully recover!

I am so jealous you’ve met and listened to Rainbow Rowell. She seems so genuine and kind on Twitter and I am dying to meet her. If she’s ever in the Northwest I’m all over it. 🙂

  4. I haven’t read Eve but completely sympathize about getting so angry at a book that you want to throw it across the room.

I’m ashamed to say I haven’t read any of the books on your list yet 🙁

    Great Answers!

  5. I’m glad to see I’m not the only person who loved The Program, I’ve been trying to get my one friend to read it since before I read the last page. I’m also glad to see All Our Yesterdays on your list, I just started reading it yesterday and so far it’s amazing! 😀

Not a Drop to Drink was actually a really good book with an awesome plot, I hope you enjoy reading it. Oh, and I’m looking forward to the end of The Selection series as well, I was a little disappointed with The Elite so here’s to hoping the finale is awesome.

  6. Andi, this is an awesome survey! I discovered Suzanne Young exactly the same way you did. And Sarah Ockler commenting on your blog, WOW. That’s incredible! Congrats! Best of luck in 2014!

  7. I love Graceling soooo much! Glad you discovered that book. I have been waiting forever for Alliegiant from the library… like a few months! sigh.. hopefully soon I will get it. So jealous of you meeting Rainbow Rowell!

  8. HA, I cheat on the first question every single year. So glad to see Altered and Pivot Point up there! LOVE THEM. I was surprised by how much I loved Altered as well. We are one with our book pushing when it comes to Altered and Pivot Point. HEEEEEEE, Nick is on my list of crushes too. We are Altered soulmates! Not a Drop to Drink is AMAZING, I’m so glad to see you’re reading it right now!

  9. Wow Sarah Ockler stopped by your blog??? That is too cool! I’m excited for #scandal to come out (it made my list of most anticipated) and Dorothy Must Die was also my pick for anticipated debut! I totally agree about Fangirl and I’m so envious of that cool personalized autographed copy you got there!!! Oh and I wish I would’ve remembered Levi for my book crush list. He’s definitely crush-worthy!!

  10. I read the first two books in the Eve trilogy, but I’ve put off reading the last book because I haven’t heard anything good about it yet. Your best books are all ones that I’ve still not managed to get too, I got a few of them for Christmas – Pivot Point, Jellicoe Road & The Program and will definitely be reading them all soon!

I still haven’t read any Rainbow Rowell, something that must be rectified this year because I’ve heard so many amazing things about all of her books. Great answers.
