Today is my turn to contribute to the fabulous feature, the brain child of Brittany at The Book Addict’s Guide, where myself, Brittany, Estelle at Rather Be Reading and Maggie at Just a Couple More Pages are paring books and beer. Pretty perfect for a bunch of beer and book lovers if you ask me.

The Beer:

When Andi asked me to be a guest poster for her collaborative project Pub Date, I knew I wanted to pick something local.  Over the years I’ve sampled quite a few beers when I travel, but there’s something particular to enjoying a home(state) brew.  When I think of Texas beers, I think of Shiner.  The beers are brewed in the small town of Shiner, TX, a few hours west of me, nestled in the Texas hill country.  I got to visit the brewery a few years back and keep meaning to make another trip out there since they’ve come out with new brews since then.  If you’re ever in Texas, it’s a must-see trip for sure!  The specific beer I went with from Shiner (which believe me, could have been any! I love quite a few of theirs) is White Wing .  I really enjoy the smoothness of this Belgian wheat ale with just the right amount of citrus flavor.  It’s a delicious beer to enjoy all year-round, but I particularly like its orange flavors during the summer — very refreshing!

The Book:

Keeping with the theme, I chose a book that’s set right here in Texas, too.  THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY by Bethany Chase at the top of my list for favorite adult reads this year.  Set in Austin Texas, thirty-something year old Sarina is on a path to find her “home”.  She’s had a rough youth, losing her mother to cancer and only being raised by her step-father.  As she surrounds herself with good friends in Austin, Texas, and attempts to live out the goals she’s set for herself, someone from her past surfaces, causing all those plans to be rewritten.  It’s a powerful novel about following your heart and choosing the path that may not be the easiest, but ultimately the best one for you.  I adored the setting, which felt so authentic to Austin.  The characters came alive from page to page, and Sarina’s story was one I could not walk away from.  This book will consume you, seeing as its the perfect pairing with a Texas local brew to devour on a hot summer day.

Thanks Ginger for guesting on today’s Pub Date! It was fun having you. And as a person that tried Shiner for the first time a couple of months ago, excellent choice.

Make sure you stop by and say hello to Ginger on her blog, twitter, or instagram!

  1. SHINER!!!! I really do love their beers. They’re all quite good and just always taste fresh! They make me think of you, G! (And Jess too — my TX girls!)
I really need to read this book, don’t I? I got it from the pub and almost gave it away because I don’t really read a lot of adult contemp but reviews have convinced me to hang on to it!
