Every now and then I see people on Twitter looking for answers on how to get a reread to count towards their reading challenge for the year. As book nerds there are occasions when we read a book for the second time and we want it to count towards our goals for the year. After reading Anna and the French Kiss for the 3rd or 4th time I knew I had to find a way to get my rereads to count and I have.
Here are all the steps I have taken to get all my rereads to count towards my challenge goals.
1) Search for the book. Enter the name of the book in the search bar as you normally would.
2) Click on the book you have reread or will reread. Whether you are starting your reread or have finished it, you need to click on the book title of the book you have already read.
3) Click on Other Editions. This will bring up a list of options that is vital for you being able to add a different version of the same book.
4) Select the new edition you want to add. You can pick any version of the book that hasn’t been marked as read. It is important that you DO NOT click on the “Switch to This Edition”Β link. That will change the version of the book you have already read to the new one you selected.
5) Select “Review this edition”. After the initial book info you will see a line that says “My Review Review this edition | Switch to this edition”. You will want to click on “Review this edition”. It is important that you DO NOT click on the “Switch to This Edition”Β link. That will change the version of the book you have already read to the new one you selected.
6) Proceed as you normally would. You can now mark the book as read with dates, as currently reading with the reading start date, to read, whatever you need to. The new version will now show up in your Goodreads Challenge when you have finished it.
And there you have it. My 6 steps to adding a reread so it counts towards your Goodreads Challenge. I hope it makes sense. If it doesn’t feel free to contact me by email, over Twitter or email me. Or just comment at the bottom.

**yes, I was searching for Shocktop Beer when I screen-capped these. π
I really like that you did a post on this, Andi! This is normally how I’d make my rereads count towards my Goodreads challenge (like recently with The Assassin’s Blade), but sometimes, I just change the dates on my original read (and note the original dates I read it in my private notes area π This will be so helpful for people!
This is very useful information. I’m always rereading, plus I’ve been making it a point to spend time rereading this year particularly.
This is how I add rereads, but it does annoy me slightly because I like my Goodreads covers to match the editions I’ve read… Goodreads should really introduce a reread button/option! And I’ve love more stats options. Sigh. R x
This is a great post! I was just thinking about this method a few days ago. π That’s funny. I bet a lot of people will find this useful, I know I’d be doing this if I ever had time to re-read. Ha.
This is such a great post, thank you for writing it! It’s one of my major bugbears with Goodreads that you can’t record rereads, and I’m so glad you shared this π I’ll have to try it out, I’m way to excited about this!
[…] Andi from Andi’s ABCs has a post with a whole tutorial on how to do this so rather than redo her work, I’ll direct you to her blog where you can see exactly how she does this process! (And how many times she’s read ANNA AND THE FRENCH KISS!) –> Goodreads Tip: Adding Re-reads […]
Dear Andi, I wanted to officially thank you for this post because it made my life so much easier today!!!!!
Oh good! This makes me so happy to hear. I love knowing this is helping people. I know it has helped me with my 90 million thousand rereads of Anna and the French Kiss. π
Thanks sooooo much for this. I’ve been trying for quite some time to figure out how to do this and have only ever managed to switch editions. I often reread books I’ve liked and wanted very much to re-review them. Now I can! You’ve made my day (and enhanced my reading list)
Thanks for the clear instructions. I don’t often re-read a book but whenever I do I always forget how to do the work around in GoodReads. Thanks again.

This is almost life-changing information. I’d reread about 14 books this year (in a series. I couldn’t stop!) and I was so upset they wouldn’t count toward my reading challenge total! Then someone pointed me toward your page and voila! My 14 books count!
Thank Youu, that was very clear and helpful
This is not working for me, I don’t know why but in step 4) all of the other editions just have “switch to this edition”, there are no new editions to select. Could someone help me!!! Thank you
Me too. I tried to follow these directions but itβs just not working. I read the book years ago and would like to mark that Iβm now listening to the audiobook, but every version is just marked as Read. Grrrr.
this is great, finally! not that I reread books that much but I just did and now it can count towards my yearly challenge. and that’s funny how you were looking for shock top. it’s one of my fav’s.
