I’m so excited to be doing an ABC for Abby Berman, the main character in The Distance From A to Z. Truthfully, one of the problems with writing a book is that once it’s done, you can’t play with the characters anymore. But getting to “dress” and “style” Abby brought me right back into her world, and it was such a treat to go back to living with her in my head as I “pretend” she’s not someone I actually know.
So here’s what I’ve got!
Accessory: French coffee cups
I won’t lie: there’s a lot of coffee drinking in this book. Abby loves coffee, as does her roommate Alice. And there’s a special scene that involves creating mugs with special quotes on them. I think that if Abby knew about these mugs she would definitely buy them, and then worry about giving one to Zeke. And think it’s silly that she bought them. And then take them out of the box to admire them over and over again. And then decide she’s just keeping both. And then give one to Zeke. And then… well, you know.
Books: TWO SUMMERS by Aimee Friedman
In real life, I have a massive author crush on Aimee Friedman. But I think this book in particular would really appeal to Abby, and not just because it’s all about spending the summer in France. Abby knows very well what it’s like to be pulled between two different “worlds,” and two different locations. Her life feels divided between her life in Chicago and the life she imagines she’d lead if she lived in France. And at the end of the book… well, the issue of geography comes back. I can imagine this as the type of book that Abby would adore and read over and over again.
Clothes: Haters gonna hate t-shirt from Busted Tees.
This one is kind of a no brainer since I actually used it as inspiration and it appears in the book. Let’s just say, Abby really likes it and it has a special meaning for her and Zeke. But clothing and funny t-shirts in particular hold a special place of honor in this book. I wish I could just make a listing of all the t-shirts I dreamed up or found online.
