One class assignment. One second chance at love. The school player is all in. Now he needs to win back the sweet commitment girl who's forever owned his heart.

Justin Carter has a secret. He's not the total player Fairfield Academy believes him to be. Not really. In fact, he used to be a one-woman guy...and his feelings for her never went away. Too bad he broke her heart three years ago and made sure to ruin any chance she'd ever forgive him.

Peyton Williams is a liar. She pretends to be whole, counting down the days until graduation and helping her parents at the family ranch. But the truth is, she's done everything she can to get over Justin, and salvation is just around the corner. With graduation one short month away, she'll soon break free from the painful memories and start her life fresh. Of course, she has to get through working with him on one last assignment first.

For Justin, nothing ever felt as right as being with Peyton, and now that fate's given him a shot at redemption, he's determined to make the most of it. And for Peyton...well, Justin Carter has always been her kryptonite.

I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

I love a good “win back the girl you lost” story. It’s typically fun and entertaining and The Natural History of Us is exactly that. To be honest I was concerned when I learned it was Justin’s story. I didn’t like him at all in the first book The Fine Art of Pretending.  I thought he was arrogant and pompous. But I felt this way about characters before, i.e., Froi in Finnikin of the Rock; Silas in All Lined Up; Dean in The Deal, and I managed to love them in their own book so I went for it with that hope in the back of my mind. In the end I really ended up liking Justin. Was he a little misguided and made really bad decisions? Sure. But he truly made the book for me.

The Natural History of Us is about Justin and Peyton, seniors at Fairfield Academy. 3 years ago they had a brief, secret relationship and Justin broke Peyton’s heart. Since then she has stayed away from him and the feelings he brought out in her. That all chances though when they are paired up for one final project before graduating, a project that keeps them together and brings them closer to what they had in freshman year. Now Peyton and Justin are forced to face the past they have been hiding from and one will find out everything may not be how it seems.

First I will warn you. There are a lot of misunderstandings in The Natural History of Us and at times you will want to throttle them and tell them to talk. But then you will remember they are teenagers and teenagers are typically led by emotions and not logic and that is exactly what Peyton and Justin are doing. They let their emotions get the best of them and it sends them down a spiraling kind of path that neither of them wanted. I guess that was the great part of the misunderstandings. It was what made both Peyton and Justin see what they wanted and essentially grow up. Made them to start making decisions for themselves and not what everyone else wanted for them and in the end I really liked that.

In the end I found The Natural History of Us to be fun and entertaining. I really enjoyed the change in the characters as they figured things out. Would I have changed some stuff? Sure. But I liked the story and the message a lot. And Justin really grew on me a lot too so definitely a win in my book. I say to definitely pick this one up.

  1. Ooh, The Natural History of Us sounds very intriguing! I’ve yet to read a Rachel Harris novel, but I definitely have my eye on this one as well as The Fine Art of Pretending 😉
