NYC/BookCon

A few weeks or a month ago I mentioned I was headed to New York and BookCon for the weekend. Honestly I had no idea what to expect when Gail and Tiff brought up the idea of going but it really turned out into more than I could imagine. I really had a fantastic time and this time I can 100% say it wasn’t about the books (okay, minus the one book I got that I’m reading right now).

Friday:

On Friday morning Deana, Danielle, and I left our house and picked up Gail. The four of us drove to Connecticut and took the train to Grand Central. I honestly always forget how gorgeous Grand Central is until I’m in it. And I also never take a picture. Thank goodness for Deana.

After we checked into the hotel the 4 of us made our way to Rockefeller Center to see the Koons balloon which was super cool, grabbed some lunch and some beers and then took a taxi to The Strand. The Strand was just as I remembered it. I swear there is nothing better than those creaking floors on the second floor. Anyway, I couldn’t leave without making a purchase so I bought a book that just came out today and some pins. When we were done there we went back to the hotel to relax and then get ready for dinner with Tiff and her husband. (sorry no people pictures. I’m terrible at that.)

Saturday:

Saturday morning I was up at the butt crack of dawn to head to the Penguin Teen Breakfast. The breakfast was held at a very appropriate place called Print and Chelsea did a fabulous job. We were all invited to eat and chat with 5 authors that have fall releases with Penguin:

Marie Lu (WARCROSS 9/12), Kristin Cashore (JANE, UNLIMITED 9/19), Stephanie Perkins (THERE’S SOMEONE INSIDE YOUR HOUSE 9/26), Peter Bognanni (THINGS I’M SEEING WITHOUT YOU 10/3), and Julie Dao (FOREST OF A THOUSAND LANTERNS 10/10).

Each author came to the tables and talked to us about there books. It was really really cool to hear them describe their stories and to be able to ask questions and tell them how much some of their other books have meant to us. By the time I left there I was really excited to read Jane, Unlimited and Things I’m Seeing Without You and very intrigued by Warcross and Forest of a Thousand Lanterns. But really you all know my highlight was meeting Stephanie Perkins. She was seriously just as awesome as I expected her to be and I was so happy when she recognized me and got up to give me a big hug. Morning was made.

When the breakfast was over I headed over to BookCon with Rachel, Kristin, Alexa, and Sajda. We honestly had no idea what to expect when we arrived there. We had all seen BookCon in the past and it was a nightmare. We were prepared but still uncertain. Surprisingly enough though it was super organized and not a madhouse like it had been in the past. I think it was handled very well which was a good thing because my nerves were high.

I stayed at BookCon for about 2 hours (even got to talk to Stephanie again where she told me she loves the cards I make!!!!) and then I left and headed to lunch to meet Sarah Ockler. It was the first time Sarah and I met and we just had the best conversation. So much in fact I was planning to go to BookCon back to BookCon but ended up not even bothering. We were together just talking about all sorts of things for like 4 hours and it was the best. She is also one of the nicest people I have ever met.

When the day was over it was back to the hotel to get ready to meet Estelle and her husband and our friend Sarah for dinner and drinks. It was one of the best days. I got to meet two of my favorite authors, hang out with some of my favorite people for long periods of time and get a small taste of BookCon.

Books:

I didn’t get a lot of books at BookCon but I got a few. I was also able to get my Anna ARC signed by Steph (it is the best inscription ever!!!) which was awesome! And can we talk about how cool that tote is from Workman Pub? I love it so so much!
