Talking About…(11)

This is going to be really hard for you to all hear. And I swear I have tried and wanted it to work out but it just isn’t and I can’t force it. It has been a valiant effort on my part and I know this is going to break a lot of book nerd hearts. I tried to ignore it and push though but I just can’t do it anymore. The truth is, I’m just not a fan of Harry Potter and I don’t think I’m going to finish the series. There, I said it.

And below is a current picture of me.

Look, I get it, you all loved the series, and mostly grew up reading it. I can see the draw and how fun it would be to have a crew of people with you reading and oohing and ahhing over the Potter gang. It makes perfect sense. But for me, reading in my mid to late 30s, by myself with most of you book nerds having read it, it just doesn’t work for me. There is a disconnect and I just can’t get past it. I read the first 4 books and thought they were okay, book 4 being the best, but I listened to like 3 hours of book 5 and I’m bored and just not into it.

I wanted to loved it like oh so many of my friends have. I wanted to find the magic, but it just didn’t happen and I can’t force myself to do it any longer.

So to all of you Potterhead book nerds I send my sincerest apologies. I tried, I really did, but I just can’t.

Don’t hate me.

Now tell me, what super popular series are you a black sheep for? Make me feel better and discuss.

Noooooo Andi! Though I’m not surprised. I could tell you weren’t in to it. And I’m a black sheep for The Raven Boys. Tried reading it and hated it. Oh well.

  2. Look, you tried. You didn’t brush it off — you tried. And it just isn’t for you! And that’s okay! Because you tried!

I’m not into Game of Thrones. I read book 1 and watched season 1, and it’s just plain not for me. There’s merit for the hype, which is a relief, but I’m not the right audience. I’m also not into Throne of Glass (read a couple chapters and again, couldn’t get into it), which I feel like tomatoes were always thrown at me when I admitted that :/

But anyway, it’s okay, Andi! I would be judging you if you DIDN’T attempt to read the series and still said you didn’t like it (“How do you know you don’t like it if you don’t try it?”). You made it over halfway through. You’re set <3

  3. Dude, sometimes you’re just the black sheep. It’s not like you said you hated it or anything, it’s just not for you. I feel that. You know I’m the Black Sheep of the Maas books, as well as Sarah Dessen, so it is what it is. Own it, dude. =)

  4. No worries!

I’m really glad I read Harry Potter when I was younger. My age was always very similar to Harry’s age when each book came out.

But now, years later, I actually can’t even reread books 1-3 because they feels o childish to me. They’re more like middle grade and I don’t like middle grade. I do still enjoy 4-7 though.

I understand, Andi. I read the first two books a couple of years ago, and haven’t really had a desire to finish them. LOL

  6. Awww!! This makes me sad. BUT– I reread the series to my son about a year ago and found that it wasn’t as magical the 2nd time around. Maybe because I was older?? The first time I read these I was like 20. I don’t know what the deal was, but I was really annoyed with Dumbledore and Ron the whole time I was rereading them.

Also, I’m ALWAYS a black sheep, so you’re not alone. Like every book I love is usually rated super low & I don’t care for fantasy, so that in of itself makes me the outsider.
