As a professional hockey player, people think I live a charmed life. On the surface, I do. But they don’t know the horrors of my childhood, or the real reason that I have custody of my seventeen-year-old sister, Janelle. And that’s exactly the way I like it. They may think I’m a prick because I don’t like to share, but that’s fine. They don’t know me, and they don’t need to.

In an effort to help Janelle get settled in Phoenix and stay out of trouble at school, I set her up with a job at Clarke’s Corner, the local bookstore owned by the girlfriend of a teammate. It’s there that she makes friends with Veronica Woodley, the extremely annoying, arrogant, money-hungry divorcee who I don’t want anywhere near my sister. Janelle insists I’m completely wrong about Veronica, but I refuse to accept that. I have to keep reminding myself that that the gorgeous blond with legs for days is off limits.

Through a series of events, I start to see Veronica for what she really is—an amazing woman who has survived her own hell to come out even stronger. I have to admit, we’re more alike than not and the attraction between us burns hot.

Maybe I was all wrong about my ability to love and commit, but when the past comes back to haunt me, can I be the man that Veronica, and Janelle, deserve?

I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

When Riggs was first introduced in one the the Arizona Vengeance books I was intrigued by his story. Off the bat Riggs was mysterious and aloof and you could tell he had a story to share. What that story was I had no idea, but I was excited to find out. So when book 11 of the Arizona Vengeance series was announced to be Riggs I was very very happy. And after reading it I’m thrilled with what we got as fans of this hockey team.

Riggs is a hockey player on the Arizona Vengeance team. He shows up, plays his position on the team to the best of his ability and goes home and takes care of his 17 year old sister, Janelle, who he has custody. Everything else about Riggs is a mystery to his teammates and Riggs is mostly fine with that. He doesn’t want people in his and Janelle’s business anyway. But slowly Riggs finds himself getting closer to his teammates (thanks to advice from Baden) and letting his sister get closer to Clarke when she is hired at her book store. What Riggs doesn’t see coming is the attraction he feels to Veronica, Clarke’s BFF and the woman that Janelle has gotten close with, that she trust. What starts as hate between the two adults quickly becomes something neither one saw coming and it might just be time for both of them to stop hiding and just open up.

First and foremost the thing I liked the most about Riggs was his fierce protectiveness of his sister. He would literally do anything for her and that right there made him the perfect hero for this book. Janelle was in a bad situation and Riggs didn’t even pause to think what taking on his sister would do to his life. He just acted and brought her to live with him so she was safe. He would have given anything he could for her and that is what I loved the most about him and his story. Next I loved how his relationship started with Veronica and how it progressed. They entertained me as soon as they met and how they riled one another up. They had met their match in each other and it filled me with so much joy.

Now without giving anything away I want to tell there is some content warning. There are some serious situations that are discussed in this book so know that going in. But that aside, getting to know Riggs was a fantastic reading experience and he took me by surprise with how awesome a character he truly. I don’t know about you but I’m excited for the next chapter of this series!
