Meet Sloane Emily Jacobs: a seriously stressed-out figure-skater from Washington, D.C., who choked during junior nationals and isn’t sure she’s ready for a comeback. What she does know is that she’d give anything to escape the mass of misery that is her life.

Now meet Sloane Devon Jacobs, a spunky ice hockey player from Philly who’s been suspended from her team for too many aggressive hip checks. Her punishment? Hockey camp, now, when she’s playing the worst she’s ever played. If she messes up? Her life will be over.

When the two Sloanes meet by chance in Montreal and decide to trade places for the summer, each girl thinks she’s the lucky one: no strangers to judge or laugh at Sloane Emily, no scouts expecting Sloane Devon to be a hero. But it didn’t occur to Sloane E. that while avoiding sequins and axels she might meet a hockey hottie—and Sloane D. never expected to run into a familiar (and very good-looking) face from home. It’s not long before the Sloanes discover that convincing people you’re someone else might be more difficult than being yourself.

I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

I really enjoyed Morrill’s first book Meant to Be so I was thrilled when I was approved on Netgalley for an early copy of Being Sloane Jacobs. I had fallen in love with the description because really who doesn’t love ice skating and hockey? And girls doing both? AWESOMENESS! Well I am pleased to report that Morrill lived up to the expectations from her first book and nailed Being Sloane Jacobs much in the way that I expected.

Being Sloane Jacobs is about 2 girls from 2 different backgrounds, with the same first and last name. First you have Sloane Emily, the good girl with the political family from DC. She was a figure skating star that chocked in a competition and is out to make return to the word of skating. And then there is Sloane Devon, the ice hockey star from Philadelphia that seems to have lost her mojo and is in a downward hockey spiral. Both girls have one thing in common besides their names and it is the drive to hide from their life. And when they have a chance encounter in a hotel in Canada they do exactly that and they switch places.  With the pressure off both girls find themselves in unknown situations and pressures they never expected that just might lead them to what they really want.

I basically devoured this book. It was one of those easy to read in a day kind of reads, not because it had no substance but because you were that entertained. Morrill managed to really transform both Sloane Emily and Sloane Devon simply be removing them from their comfort zones and inserting them into a world that was completely foreign to them. By doing this Sloane Emily found what it was like to not be so perfect and to not have the spot light on her. She learned how to work as a team. And Sloane Devon, she lightened up and wasn’t so hardcore as she had been in the beginning. Both girls adapted to their situations and made the best out of it without having the pressure they normally felt on their backs. It was truly enjoyable to see the character growth.

Was Being Sloane Jacobs a book that wasn’t filled with improbable situations, not really. I mean the whole thing was improbable. But it was filled with enough heart and romance and friendship and chance taking that in the end it didn’t matter whether or not either girl would be wildly successful in their new “life”. It was about more than that and I think Morrill did an excellent job of showcasing that. I would definitely recommend you pick this one up. I’m glad I did.
