On My Radar – July Releases (12)

It’s finally 90 in Boston…well for today and tomorrow anyway. And with 90s in June there is only one thing on my mind…July. July is one of my favorite months of the year. It is usually the tome when the weather is great and the books released are pretty fantastic and mostly quiet. There usually aren’t a ton of hype books released in July and that’s part of the reason I love books that come out then. You can find some great gems.

Currently there are 16 books on my TBR that are released in July, but I’m focusing on 6. Two of them I have read and gave 5 stars and the other 4 are ones I’m super excited for:

Somehow I’ve become a liar. A coward. Here’s how it happened.

Genevieve knows she was there, and that there was another driver, a man named Brad Freeman, who everyone assumes is guilty. But as she slowly pieces together the night of the accident, Genevieve is hit with a sickening sense of dread—that maybe she had something to do with what happened.

As the internet rages against Brad Freeman, condemning him in a brutal trial by social media, Genevieve escapes to her father’s house, where she can hide from reporters and spend the summer volunteering in beautiful Zion National Park. But she quickly realizes that she can’t run away from the accident, or the terrible aftermath of it all.

Incredibly thought-provoking and beautifully told, Paula Stokes’s story will compel readers to examine the consequences of making mistakes in a world where the internet is always watching…and judging.

On My Radar – July Releases (12)Who's That Girl by Blair Thornburgh
Published by HarperTeen
on July 11th 2017
Amazon, Goodreads

This laugh-out-loud debut is filled with hilarious awkward encounters, a supportive LGBTQ organization, and too many cheesy lyrics to count—all with the compulsive readability of Audrey, Wait! and Boy Meets Boy.

Junior Nattie McCullough has always been that under-the-radar straight girl who hangs out in the cafeteria with her gay-straight alliance friends. She’s never been the girl that gets the guy, let alone the girl that gets a hit song named after her. But when last summer’s crush, smoking-hot musician Sebastian Delacroix—who has recently hit the mainstream big-time—returns home to play a local show, that’s just what she gets. He and his band, the Young Lungs, have written a chart-topping single—“Natalie”—which instantly makes Nattie second guess everything she thought about their awkward non-kiss at that June pool party. That it was horrific. That it meant nothing. That Sebastian never gave her another thought.

To help keep her mind off of Sebastian and his maybe-about-her, maybe-not-about-her song, Nattie throws herself into planning the school’s LGBTQIA dance. That proves problematic, too, when Nattie begins to develop feelings for her good friend Zach. With the song getting major airplay and her once-normal life starting to resemble the cover of a gossip magazine, Nattie is determined to figure out once and for all if her brief moment with Sebastian was the stuff love songs are made of—or just a one-hit wonder.

You have four days to locate five treasured trophies. Break the rules and you all die. Happy hunting!

Back in September, the town of Bakersville, Ohio made national news when a video went viral featuring thirteen of the high school’s elite in compromising positions. Now it’s May, and every month since the “Bakersville Dozen” made their infamous appearance on the national stage, one girl has gone missing. Officials are no closer to identifying the criminal.

Bailey “Like a Virgin” Holzman is getting really fed up with the scrutiny. She just wants to enjoy the rest of her senior year and have an epic summer before heading off to college. So when she discovers a note in her locker on the last day of school inviting her on a scavenger hunt, she thinks it’s just a sweet surprise from her boyfriend trying to cheer her up.

But following the clue leads her, instead, to the first official casualty. And another sinister envelope. The killer is close, and it could be anyone. Even the people Bailey’s always trusted most—her best friend, her perfect boyfriend, or the boy-next-door she’s always pined for.

With the clock ticking, she faces a terrifying choice: play the game by the killer’s rules—follow the clues, tell no one, and no cops—for a chance to save the rest of the missing girls, or risk becoming the next grisly victim.

On My Radar – Mayhem Series (10)

Wednesday I was looking for a new addictive book to read. It started simply enough I went on to Amazon and started to look at different New Adult Romances. The suggestions were not what I was going for so then I went to Over Drive and looked at what they had. I found a Bella Andre book, Kiss Me Like This, and took that out. It was fun but not really what I was looking for. Enter Twitter and Katie, my NA guru. I asked her what she had for suggestions. The first one I had read and then she said,

Fun is a complete understatement! I’m HOOKED. My library happened to have the first three available for me to checkout on eBook. Needless to say Mayhem was read in one day, I’m on Riot, and Chaos is waiting on my Kindle as we type this. Sadly they don’t have book 4, but I think I can bring myself to buy that one. Actually when all is said and done I may buy the whole series.

On My Radar – May Releases (9)When Dimple Met Rishi by Sandhya Menon
Published by Simon Pulse
on May 30th 2017
Amazon, Goodreads

A laugh-out-loud, heartfelt YA romantic comedy, told in alternating perspectives, about two Indian-American teens whose parents have arranged for them to be married.

Dimple Shah has it all figured out. With graduation behind her, she’s more than ready for a break from her family, from Mamma’s inexplicable obsession with her finding the “Ideal Indian Husband.” Ugh. Dimple knows they must respect her principles on some level, though. If they truly believed she needed a husband right now, they wouldn’t have paid for her to attend a summer program for aspiring web developers…right?

Rishi Patel is a hopeless romantic. So when his parents tell him that his future wife will be attending the same summer program as him—wherein he’ll have to woo her—he’s totally on board. Because as silly as it sounds to most people in his life, Rishi wants to be arranged, believes in the power of tradition, stability, and being a part of something much bigger than himself.
The Shahs and Patels didn’t mean to start turning the wheels on this “suggested arrangement” so early in their children’s lives, but when they noticed them both gravitate toward the same summer program, they figured, Why not?

Dimple and Rishi may think they have each other figured out. But when opposites clash, love works hard to prove itself in the most unexpected ways.

On My Radar – Lauren Miller (8)

It is no secret that I’m a fan of Lauren Miller. I fell in love with her writing the second I started her debut novel Parallel back in March of 2013. She took a subject that I knew little about and made it readable and enjoyable. It quickly became a favorite of mine and it has been my goal to get anyone I can to read it. Parallel (currently $5.99 for Kindle) is smart and thought provoking. It makes you wonder what your life could have been like if you made one choice differently. If you went to a different college; applied for a job somewhere else; turned left instead of right. The characters where awesome and you really felt what the felt. Not to mention that one little twist that still gets me every time. I think it is a book everyone should read and I may not rest until that happens.

And then there was her second book, Free to Fall. Free to Fall (currently $3.99 for the Kindle) is so current. In a world where technology rules our lives it fit the scope of where the world is perfectly. It got you thinking about how we do let technology help us make decisions. We look on line now before we buy something to see what others think. We rely on it to talk to friends and make plans. Technology is everything in the world and Free to Fall takes it a tiny step further with technology being the only way to make decisions. Another fantastic character driven story with just a hint of dystopian/sci-fi to it.

What brought this post on? Miller’s third book, All Things New. I just finished it yesterday and it was so unbelievably amazing. It is probably Miller’s most real book to date. It has a hint of something to it that doesn’t make it a straight contemporary, but even with that the book is just so truthful and honest. It’s a story about a girl that is scarred from an accident and can suddenly seeing wounds on people that aren’t there. It’s a struggle about seeing what is below the surface and what people hide and how it is okay to not be okay. It was straight up fantastic and I think it is something that people need to read and I want it on your radar. You won’t be disappointed. I know I wasn’t.

On My Radar – Lauren Miller (8)All Things New by Lauren Miller
Published by Three Saints Press
on August 1st 2017
Goodreads

From the author of PARALLEL and FREE TO FALL comes a novel about how it feels to be broken and what means to be real.

Seventeen-year-old Jessa Gray has always felt broken inside, but she’s gotten very good at hiding it. No one at school knows about the panic attacks, the therapy that didn't help, the meds that haven’t worked. But when a severe accident leaves her with a brain injury and noticeable scars, Jessa’s efforts to convince the world that she’s okay finally crumble—now she looks as shattered as she feels. Fleeing from her old life in Los Angeles, Jessa moves to Colorado to live with her dad, but things go from bad to worse when she realizes she’s seeing bruises and scars on the people around her that no one else can see. She blames it on the accident, but as her body heals and the hallucinations continue, Jessa wonders if what she’s seeing could somehow have a deeper meaning.
