Pub Date #17

Today is my turn to contribute to the fabulous feature, the brain child of Brittany at The Book Addict’s Guide, where myself, Brittany, Estelle at Rather Be Reading and Maggie at Just a Couple More Pages are paring books and beer. Pretty perfect for a bunch of beer and book lovers if you ask me.

I wasn’t really sure what I was going to do for this month’s Pub Date. I was planning to go to the liquor store and see what I could find that was creepy/horror. But then I went out after work on Tuesday and a beer metaphorically fell right into my lap. Actually it ended up being pretty fitting.

RoadsmarysBaby_Cam01_Comp-1

The Beer
When I was out with some co-workers I knew I had wanted to drink something fall and/or pumpkin. We were at a place that had a lot of different beers on tap but when someone order Roadsmary’s Baby Scary-Good Pumpkin Ale I was in. It was actually really good for a pumpkin ale. It didn’t have the same cinnamon-ish flavor that a lot of pumpkin beers have.  And you could definitely taste the vanilla. The ABV is 6.8% which is high for drinking on a Tuesday night, but worth it. I would definitely get this one again.

The Book
This was definitely harder as I don’t really do creepy or scary books. But then I started thinking to myself that I didn’t have to be so literal. There are other things that could make something scary. So for this month I have selected 2 books that are scary in their own way.

wantto delirium

Want To Go Private? by Sarah Darer Littman: This book is creepy and scary for one reason…it’s real and can happen. I remember reading this book and immediately wanting to give it to so many people just so they could read it. It scared me how easily people can be swayed by someone.

Delirium by Lauren Oliver: I can’t imagine how cold it would feel to live in a world where you can’t love. That’s what’s scary about this book.

This month’s Pub Date was hard yo! Like really really hard. The prompt is work/hobbies. I mean my current hobby besides reading is planners and stickers and there is no beer I could find that catered to that. And I work in HR. Another bust. BUT a friend of mine from work mentioned something the other day that stuck. Every September there is an after work function that we attend to mingle and almost every year we have a Pumpkin beer.

So I decided to cheat a little this month (my blog, my rules!) and show off some of the pumpkin beers I have tried although it is usually Shipyard had at this function.

pumpkin-beers-640-620x620

The Beer
Shipyard Pumpkinhead: By far my favorite of all the ones I have tried. I really like the pumpkin taste and I find a cinnamon sugar rim brings out the flavor. Add some apple beer and you have a winner! ABV 4.70%

Harpoon UFO Pumpkin: I have only had this one once and gave it a shot because it is from a local brewery. The color is very amber and the taste isn’t all that bad. Not my favorite. ABV 5.90%

Blue Moon Harvest Moon: This too me is more Fall than a Pumpkin beer. As a fan of Blue Moon though I liked the taste of this one. The pumpkin is very mild but it is still there. ABV 5.70%

The Traveler Beer Co. Jack-O Traveler Shandy: This one is not my favorite but I don’t hate it either. I think the wheat taste was just a little too heavy for my liking, but definitely not a bad option. ABV 4.40%

lead

The Book
Lead by Kylie Scott: I just finished this book this week and it was kind of fitting because the girl in it, Lena, is a personal assistant. That goes perfectly with my hobbies of reading and planners. Lena had to be on top of things for rock star Jimmy so she had to be organized for sure. If you are interested in a New Adult series on rock stars I would definitely check out the 4 books in this series.

I admit to slacking some with this Pub Date post. It seems like time just seemed to get away from me and before I knew it it was time for me to get a beer for this weeks theme of Horoscope/Sign and I just failed. I wasn’t able to get to the liquor store nor was I able to try any new beer.

But  the show must go on.

422817_original-jpgI did some digging into my sign, LEO (the lion, not Dicaprio), and found out it is a fire sign. To be honest I’m not all that into astrology and signs and horoscopes. I’ve gone and gotten my cards read, skeptically, and have read my horoscope here and there when I was younger. It just isn’t my thing. But when doing my research I learned that fire signs are  creative and I liked that trait. I mean just look at my blog. You have to have some type of creativity to run one.

Anyway I started to think about fire when it came to beer and I remember my trip to Hawaii in 2010 and the beer I tried there, Fire Rock by Kona Brewing Company. What is more perfect than that??

signThe Beer
Fire Rock Pale Ale (Kona Brewing Company): Admittedly it has been a long time since I have had this beer but I remember liking it a lot. I’m a fan of pale ales to begin with and this one had a nice citrus taste to it which is another thing I like. It was also locally brewed so that was a high point too. The alcohol percentage is at 6% ABV which was high for me the time I was drinking these, but not too heavy in the long run. I’m not sure what I would compare it to because like I said it has been a while, but definitely one I would suggest trying.

Some pictures from the trip to Hawaii:

The Book:
The book was the easy part. Actually I should say books because it is a whole series I am telling you about today and I think it fits in PERFECTLY with the theme of Fire and Creativity.

rule jet rome nash rowdy asa

The Marked Men series by Jay Crownover.
I have read 4 of these so far and can’t wait to read the rest to be honest. They are hot and fun and all either tattoo artists, tattoo lovers or in love with a tattoo enthusiast. What better fit for creativity and fire then sexy tattoo boys?? I can’t think of any. A definite series to read if you want to jump into the land of New Adult or what some book crack. Currently Rome is my favorite, but I have Rowdy up next and I have high hopes for him. I mean look at his book cover??? SWOON!

I switched with Brittany for this round of Pub Date so I’m up again. This month’s theme is Beach/BBQ.

Sea-Dog-Sunfish

The Beer
Sea Dog Sunfish: Just last weekend I was at the beach up in Maine, Old Orchard Beach to be specific, and I tried this beer on the suggestion of our waitress. I had been drinking Shock Top Lemon Shandy for most of the weekend so this was a nice departure. It was supposed to be a combination of peach essence with a hint of grapefruit, but I didn’t got much of the peach. I did get that citrus taste which made this a perfect beach/BBQ kind of beer. I have never had anything really similar so I wouldn’t even know what I could suggest. Maybe Shiner Ruby Redbird would be close to a suggestion.

whatithought

The Book
What I Thought Was True by Huntley Fitzpatrick: Does this cover alone not scream beach? I mean they are on the freaking beach. 😉 But seriously this was an excellent beach read. It takes place over the summer (spoiler alert) and navigates the ups and downs of teenage emotions and falling in love. I know we are all excite for Huntley’s next book, The Boy Most Likely To (out August 4th), but don’t forget to check out this gem. REVIEW

For this round of Pub Date it is all about Patriotic America. With July 4th being tomorrow it seems very fitting. Honestly it took me no time in figuring out what beer to pick but the book, that was a little harder, until I started reading it that is.

america

The Beer
Sam Adams Porch Rocker: Does any beer company scream America more than Samuel Adams? I think not. The brewery is around the corner from my house (no, I have never been), and they only brew this one seasonally and as a limited release. It is similar to a shandy but not as lemony. It has a crisp, clean taste and has a 4.5% ABV. If you like Sam Summer, you will like this one.

Other beer suggestions: Shocktop Lemon Shandy, Brooklyn Summer, Leinenkugel Summer Shandy Variety Pack (the Ginger is AMAZING, as is the grapefruit)

america1

The Book
Come Back to Me by Mila Gray: I just recently started this book and knew it was perfect for the theme. It is about a Marine on leave that falls for his best friend’s sister even though he shouldn’t. Eventually he has to return to active duty which complicates things. I’m only a little ways in but I love it. I was lucky enough to get a copy as a gift, but you will be able to buy it in the US in December.
