Doing this guest post for THE DEVIL YOU KNOW was pretty easy. Cadie is a girl into fashion, specifically taking cast-off things and repurposing them into something fresh and new. She knows how to sew, loves the hunt at the local thrift shop, and has the patience to save up for the big ticket items. I think the ABCs of Arcadia Wells actually give quite a bit of insight into who she is…

Accessory: Celtic Knot and Swallows Necklace
In seafaring lore, the swallow was symbol of home and hope. Sailors would get the first swallow before they left and after successfully finishing the trip, they’d get the second. Also, because swallows are land birds, when sailors see swallows, it means they’re almost home. Some people also see swallows as a symbol of freedom, being able to fly. So I think all of this works really well for Cadie who wants to fly, but also loves her home. While I don’t mention any jewelry in the story at all, I can see her wearing this.

Book: Not All Those Who Wander Are Lost Journal Cover
Cadie is definitely a reader, but her bookish item has to be a travel journal. She has plans to go and do and see, and she needs somewhere to record her memories. I also love the Tolkien quote because while I don’t think Cadie knows her direction just yet, she’s not really lost.

Clothing: Rag & Bone Moto textured-leather biker boots
When Cadie gets dressed for the campfire party, she chooses a pair of motorcycle boots she bought after saving a couple of paychecks from the grocery store where she works. She’d need more than a couple of paychecks for this pair (even on sale) but these are the closest to the boots I pictured in my head while I was writing. They are badass boots and she is definitely the girl who can wear them.

Accessory: Silver Royal Santa Fe Ranch saddle
In his duties as a ranch hand on his dad’s massive ranch in Wyoming, Henry Whitmire wears out a saddle every few years. He’s had his eye on this one for a while, but the maker is proud of it and Henry can’t afford it yet. He likes the fact that it’s made with premium leather and has a nice soft feel, but it’s tough enough for ranch work in Wyoming’s harsh terrain.

Book: First edition Lonesome Dove
Henry gave Meg an anniversary edition of To Kill a Mockingbird for Christmas and he’s hoping she’ll reciprocate and give him this first edition Lonesome Dove. He loves this book because it’s gritty and real, and when he reads it he can taste the dirt of the trail. He’s not into romanticizing the cowboy life because it’s his real life, but he does love how McMurtry created characters like Gus who talk and behave like most of the men Henry has grown up around on the ranch.

Clothes: University of Wyoming sweatshirt
Henry’s been accepted to the University of Wyoming where his parents and older sister attended. First he’ll spend a year in Nicaragua helping out some kids that need him more than he’ll ever understand. Until then, he wears his UW sweatshirt as often as possible. It’s been washed so many times the elbows have worn, but it’s still his favorite item in the closet. It doesn’t hurt that Meg borrows it all the time and it smells like her shampoo.

She would slide this charm on her bracelet the moment she got it, and finger it whenever something was stressing her out as a reminder to take a deep breath.

Although Melissa loves all kinds of music and is constantly listening to something, her go to band is the Beatles. She is itching to get her hands on this book and discover all the inside scoop about the songs she finds so much inspiration from.

The neon yellow cardigan from Forever 21. Melissa is thrilled that the hot color for spring is yellow. It’s her favorite color. In fact, her nickname is Mellow Yellow. She’s a conservative dresser, so this new sweater in Forever 21’s spring collection would be on the top of her wish list. She could wear it with jeans and a t-shirt on chilly, rainy April days or over a simple sundress as the spring days start to get a little warmer.

Palmer is always dressed to the nines, and never shy about flashing her brands. She wears a lot of black and would seriously be considering what sandals could be her go to pair for summer. These flat, slip ons check all her boxes.

This blank journal to write all of the ideas that flood her head in. Palmer writes for the school magazine, but she also writes out pros and cons about what boy to date, lists of what she wants to be when she grows up, dreams, details, smells, scenes, and emotions. Her journal is where she works out all of the stuff that swirls around her brain. She always has a journal in her purse or backpack. She’d like this one, because it’s a new, hip company, with a social cause (funding academic scholarships to girls in Kosovo) and Palmer would feel like she was on the cutting edge by having it. Plus it’s pretty

Ahh yes, her favorite! Palmer has her eye on this black leather mini skirt, that’s daring, but classy with the lace-like cut outs. She could wear it on a hot date, which she hopes to have many of this spring, or to brunch with her family.

I thought I’d share one of my side character’s picks…Georgie, Finn’s little sister, shows back up in TWIST and is just as sassy as ever. She’s a Shifter (a time traveler who moves through space and time) like the main character Bree:

It’s all about going hands-free when you’re a Shifter. A lanyard makes perfect sense if you need to keep track of keys or what-nots. I love this one. (Side note: the company that sells these, One Loom Designs, has an awesome mission to employ and empower single mothers in Guatemala. Each item is hand-woven and gorgeous. Under the Painted Sky by Stacey Lee

Under A Painted Sky by Stacey Lee. Georgie is one of Bree’s best friends. I imagine them having a ridiculous number of adventures together. Under A Painted Sky is an unlikely friendship story set in the Wild West on a road trip of sorts (so, umm, trail trip?) and that equals one big YES, PLEASE. Wish I could claim Georgie was reading this for research in case she ever landed in the mid-1800’s, but nope. Just for fun and feels.

Clothes-
ModCloth Soda Fountain Dress
Not gonna lie, a little obsessed with this dress. Time travelers need to always be prepared for wherever they might pop up, and how much fun would it be for that “wherever” to be a 1950’s soda shop in this frock?

Heya, journal. I’m finally getting around to recording the gorgeous dream I had last night.

In the dream, there are three gifts sitting on the end of my bed. Because I guess everybody’s a little bit psychic in dreams, I know the gifts are from one of my characters, but I don’t know which one.

The first gift I unwrap is a necklace, the pendant a treble and bass clef arranged in the shape of a heart, layered over flowers, layered over a page of music. It’s so, so pretty, and it drives me nuts that I don’t own it in real life, because I would totally wear it every day! Dream Me wonders whether the necklace came from Uri. She’s never had anything nice to say (and I could pretty much end the sentence right there…) about the piano pendant I sometimes wear. This could be her subtle suggestion for a replacement in the musical jewelry department. Except Uri doesn’t do “subtle”, so I scrap that theory.

The second gift is book-shaped; always a good sign, in a package. Unwrapped, it proves to be a copy of “Charlotte’s Web” by E.B. White – a childhood favorite! – with one critical difference. You know that most excellent of ending lines? “It is not often that someone comes along who is a true friend and a good writer. Charlotte was both.” My secret gift-giver had rewritten it to read: “Annabelle was both.”

Oh, journal, I know not the words to express what that means to Dream Me, and to my waking self that holds the memory. For a split sec, I think it might be from Abishan, since the story’s full of talking animals. But on second thought, I realize it doesn’t star any cats, so there’s no reason for my cat god to care. It does, however, star a Wilbur. My dream heart quickens with the hope that it might be from my sweet and noble knight.

Then comes the third and final gift, every bit as beautiful as the rest, and more telling by far: A summery dress printed with the willows, footbridge, and lily pond of a Monet painting. The dress is as good as a signature. I know the gift-giver now. Subtle and musical, classic and thoughtful, with Impressionist ties to boot. It can only be Yves!

I have just enough time to smile inward at my mystery boy before waking. Such a good dream. I wonder if Yves deliberately inspired it, with a little help from a muse. If so, even without goodies to hold in the physical world, I thank him for the gift.
