Tears on My Pillow – Book Quote

summerlovinSo I’m going with my own take on today’s participation posts. The post could be one of two things, a quote from what you are currently reading or a book that pulled on your heart strings. Since I’m getting ready to leave tomorrow I’m not really reading anything particular at the moment and if I was going to talk about a book that pulled on my heart strings I would go with Second Chance Summer by Morgan Matson. Ugly cry with that one I tell you. But what I’m going to do instead is go with a quote that touched me deeply.

Like in yesterday’s post, I could have gone with a number of options. I actually did a whole post on my top ten book quotes here. But narrowing it down wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be because there is really only one quote that I remember all the time that really struck me as remarkable:

twenty“I’m fine, thanks for not asking.”
Twenty Boy Summer, Sarah Ockler

It’s a simple statement when you really think about it. No poetic prose, not mushy, lovey dovey stuff. Just a simple comment that can almost appear to be a throw away comment. But when you really think about it you get something with such a deeper meaning that completely describes Twenty Boy Summer better than any description could. It describes everything Anna goes through in the book and that touched me. Because honestly sometimes we are in pain over something and it has to take a back seat because someone else’s pain is more important. Anna lost one of her best friends and her first love in the blink of an eye but she couldn’t grieve in public because it was her best friend’s brother that was gone as well. She had to say her goodbyes to herself because she had to take a back seat to her best friend who lost family, but Anna lost just as much. It was such a poignant statement and yet it has stuck with me for 2 years and I think it forever will.

So I ask, what quote has stuck with you deeply? Emotionally?

  1. Oh man, that quote. The notion of needing to stay strong for someone else even though we’re completely torn apart inside is so painful. Very good quote right there.

  2. I really liked Twenty Boy Summer but when I read that quote I thought about those that have deaths in the family and people constantly ask them if they’re ok knowing that they’re not, but somehow, that’s just the first thing that comes out of your mouth, as you’ve got nothing else to say.

I always rather remain quiet in these situations.

    My Summer Lovin post.

    • I love your take on it. Never thought of it from that point of view. To me it was always about the girl that no one thought to ask because they assumed she had nothing to grieve over.

      Thanks for stopping by.

  3. Wow, that quote is really poignant, you’re right. I think I need to read that book, too – I thought it was going to be a lighter read, based on the title, but it sounds like it’s pretty emotional.
