Accessory: Silver Royal Santa Fe Ranch saddle
In his duties as a ranch hand on his dad’s massive ranch in Wyoming, Henry Whitmire wears out a saddle every few years. He’s had his eye on this one for a while, but the maker is proud of it and Henry can’t afford it yet. He likes the fact that it’s made with premium leather and has a nice soft feel, but it’s tough enough for ranch work in Wyoming’s harsh terrain.

Book: First edition Lonesome Dove
Henry gave Meg an anniversary edition of To Kill a Mockingbird for Christmas and he’s hoping she’ll reciprocate and give him this first edition Lonesome Dove. He loves this book because it’s gritty and real, and when he reads it he can taste the dirt of the trail. He’s not into romanticizing the cowboy life because it’s his real life, but he does love how McMurtry created characters like Gus who talk and behave like most of the men Henry has grown up around on the ranch.

Clothes: University of Wyoming sweatshirt
Henry’s been accepted to the University of Wyoming where his parents and older sister attended. First he’ll spend a year in Nicaragua helping out some kids that need him more than he’ll ever understand. Until then, he wears his UW sweatshirt as often as possible. It’s been washed so many times the elbows have worn, but it’s still his favorite item in the closet. It doesn’t hurt that Meg borrows it all the time and it smells like her shampoo.

Glass Girl Summary:

When Meg Kavanagh finds herself in the unthinkable role of grieving sister, she discovers some harsh truths–parents aren’t perfect, life’s not always sweet, and the dead don’t write back. Her famous artist mom grieves by slowly disappearing, and her dad copes by moving them to a small town in Wyoming. What she finds in Wyoming blindsides her. His name is Henry Whitmire, and he shows Meg that the best things in life–like falling in love and finding mercy–require uncommon courage. From young adult author Laura Anderson Kurk comes a heartfelt story with bittersweet intensity and emotional storytelling.
